I offer a range of editorial services, for both print and digital publications, specialising in, but not limited to, the legal and academic publishing sectors. No matter what your project entails, I am here to ensure that your published work is polished and professional.
Please see below for more information on the services available – your project may require one or more, or something in between! I am flexible and happy to discuss your particular needs – please get in touch.
Copyediting happens relatively early in the publishing process and involves marking up the author's text (either in Word Track Changes or on hard copy using BS 5261C:2005) before it is laid out in its final design by the typesetter. It is a deeper level of intervention than proofreading and involves an in-depth sentence read. I will be editing your copy for consistency, clarity, readability, sense, accuracy, and applying house style, as well as correcting any errors of punctuation, grammar and spelling. I will code the structural elements of the text for the typesetter. I will also focus on appropriate language use, keeping the specific readership in mind, while always being sensitive to and respecting the author's voice.
Please contact me if you'd like to discuss a copyediting project in more detail.
Proofreading happens later in the process, after proofs have been created by the typesetter, and is a final quality check before publication to ensure that any glaring errors are picked up and the text is consistent, accurate, and works aesthetically. I will usually mark up my proofreading corrections on PDF (Adobe Reader) (or on hard copy if required).
Please contact me if you'd like to discuss a proofreading project in more detail.
Additional to the above editorial services, I also offer a comprehensive fact-checking service, which will be tailored to your specific requirements. I have many years' experience of fact-checking legal articles and case reports in a monthly journal aimed at lawyers working in the social justice sector. I understand that accuracy is absolutely key in any form of legal information and can quote for this higher level of intervention if needed.
Please contact me if you'd like to discuss a more thorough fact-checking service along with the above.
I have worked in-house for big commercial publishers but also in the not-for-profit sector. I'm familiar with editing magazines and journals, news, reports, short guides, directories, marketing material, and digital content (blogs and websites).
Since starting my freelance business, I have worked on several legal books for academic and charity publishers, including a 320k-word, multiple-author handbook of experimental jurisprudence.
Please contact me to discuss the details of your particular project.
You may have a house style guide already or you may need help in setting a consistent style. I can help with creating a style guide for your particular project - please contact me to discuss further. I am familiar and experienced in using the OSCOLA and Blue Book legal citations systems.
